Sat. ~ Sept. 19 ~ 11:00
Charles River Museum
of Industry & Innovation
~ downtown Waltham ~
The Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation is located in downtown Waltham, Mass. on the banks of, appropriately, the Charles River. It’s in a 19th century textile mill building.
Note this is a Saturday event. We will meet there at 11:00 am for a guided tour of the museum and its features, which include Waltham watch exhibits, some clock exhibits, working machine shop (belts & pulleys), exhibits of steam power objects, transportation objects, and other machines. On the automotive front, the brochure mentions a 1907 Metz/Orient buckboard auto, a 1908 Metz/Marsh motorcycle, a Model A engine cutaway, antique gas pumps, and other auto-related items.
After spending an hour or two at the museum, we’ll find some lunch at one of the many restaurants along Moody Street. We do not plan to conduct a chapter meeting here, but we will hold a meeting at the Melrose Rotary Show, which is featuring Buick this year, on the following weekend on Sunday, September 27th. Try to be there - with your Buick! (Also see the Rotary Show flyer on Page 7.)
Directions & Parking: Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation, 154 Moody Street, Waltham. Phone: 781-893-5410 website: www.crmi.org.
The Museum is located near the center of Waltham. The green in the center of town is at the corner of Main Street (Route 20) and Moody Street. Just a few hundred yards south of Route 20, Moody Street crosses the Charles River and the old textile mill building housing the museum is visible to the east; no parking is available right there however. A municipal parking area is available off Pine Street for a nominal fee. Go 1 block south of the river to the traffic light, turn to the east on Pine Street. At your 2nd left, a large sign directs you to the City of Waltham Municipal Parking lot. Part of the lot is open, part covered. There is a “Pay Here” booth in each section. From the parking
lot, signs direct you to a footbridge which crosses the river to a footpath leading to the Museum entrance. As you cross the river, notice the waterfalls to your left.
Parking costs are nominal - $1 for 2 hours, $1.50 for 3 hours, etc. Find a machine, follow payment directions to receive a ticket, and place the ticket on the dashboard of your car. Then head for the museum. Museum admission is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors.
